The Forum

The Forum was the central square of Pompeii, a pedestrian area where the civil, commercial, religious activities and the political administration of the town were concentrated Between the end of the 1st century BC and the beginning of 1st the century AD some structural modifications were introduced in the Forum: its reconstruction changed the irregular form in a rectangular plan, the paving was made of tufa and then of travertine marble. Along the perimeter of the Forum, delimitated by colonnades, different kinds of buildings were located, such as workshops and shops, in accordance to the public function of the square.
It was the main junction of the city’s main streets, the most important buildings were located there, such as the Comitium (where municipal elections took place), the Basilica (where legal and administrative meetings took place), and Apollo and Jupiter Temples, places of religious worship.
The Forum was arcaded on three sides, the exception being the north side, left open to the view of Jupiter Temple. Along the square there were numerous bases where many statues of imperators and eminent personalities of the city graced the Forum: one of these was the Suggestum, used as podium.
